AVID Elementary at Cora Kelly
Cora Kelly is currently in their third year of implementing the AVID Elementary system during the 2018-2019 school year.
Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 are taking part in systematic practices aligned to support writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading as a means for increasing student achievement across all classes each day.
More than 130 students in grades 3, 4 and 5 have enrolled and are benefiting from the additional organization structure the program provides. Students are learning self-monitoring skills, refining their goals each quarter, and are gearing up for a second-semester parent workshop where college and career learning are the focus. AVID students recently learned about the academic and behavior expectations at middle and high school from older mentor AVID students.
During middle school scheduling, students in grade 5 have the chance to consider the AVID Secondary elective course as they matriculate to grade 6. Recruitment for rising sixth-grade students continues through the month of March.
Cora Kelly is expected to have its largest recruitment for AVID secondary as a result of their AVID Elementary efforts this year.
